You and your busy bees (kiddies) may feel both excited and a little nervous about what to expect on your au pairs first day with your family. This is absolutely normal as change always takes some getting used to and we’re sure your new au pair is feeling a little nervous too. Here’s some tips to help make the first day a super easy transition for you, your kiddies and your new au pair.
1. Chat to your children about the new addition to your family.
No matter the age, your kids might question the new au pair, their role and their authority. Before the new au pair’s first day try to be very clear in explaining the above to your kids, in a way you feel most appropriate and answer any questions they may have. Make it exciting but be sure to also place the au pair in an authoritative light so as to encourage respect.
2. Be clear on your expectations.
It’s very important that you openly communicate what you expect from your au pair before they begin their new role with your family. This will help them understand their role and requirements within your family environment, as all families are different. This also gives them something to work with on their first day.
3. Welcome them with open arms.
Your new au pair might be feeling a little nervous on their first day with you. Try to engage with them, ask them a few questions and get to know them a bit too. This will ease their nerves and will help to build a healthy working relationship between you and them.
4. Show them around.
Show them around your home, if they haven’t been there already, and fill them in on the do’s and don’ts. If they are unfamiliar with your area it might be a good idea to give them a quick tour too, pointing out necessary shopping malls and extra mural locations, if you have the time!
5. Introduce them to your child/childrens school and teacher.
If they are going to be doing the school runs it’s a good idea to go with them on their first day as this allows time for you to show them your suggested route, introduce them to necessary teachers and show them around the necessary parts of the school. This will probably also make the transition an easier one for your children.
We wish you luck as you embark on this new adventure and we hope these tips will ease your worry. Remember that above all, this is an exciting day and one to look forward to!
